Wilko workers to walk out in fresh strike in dispute over rotas

Workers at two Wilko distribution centres are to stage a fresh strike in a dispute over new rotas.

Around 2,000 members of the GMB union based at Magor, South Wales and Worksop, Nottinghamshire, will walk out for 48 hours from 6am October 21.

This follows previously announced strikes on October 11 and 14.

A recent industrial action ballot among the warehouse workers employed by the retail giant showed an 84% vote in favour of strikes over the rota changes, which the GMB said will leave employees with less time to spend with their families and forced to work weekends.

GMB national officer Gary Carter said: "These brutal rotas just won't work, and seven-day deliveries have not improved availability in store.

"At weekends, warehouse workers have been asked to go home and there has not been enough work, so they've been put on cleaning duties on Saturdays and Sundays.

"Wilko needs to change the rotas and rebuild its relationship with the workforce.

"Morale is at an all-time low and if the business wants to be successful it needs to value its employees and understand they need a better work-life balance."

Speaking  last month, after announcement of new rotas, one anonymous worker told Mirror Money: "Employees are leaving left right and centre, being suspended and sacked at every opportunity, it's an awful environment to work in, The ballot results are in, and we're going to strike."

The worker, who has been employed by the firm for more than 20 years, said staff have been warned over the "repercussions" of industrial action.

"Anyone in a senior role has been warned not to strike or face the repercussions, and staff have been warned it's in their best interest to come to work," she added.

"It's like they are punishing us any way they can because we're standing up for ourselves, and it's been made pretty clear they have no intention of offering us a more palatable rota."

Wilko told Mirror Money: “We’re sorry it has come to this and would like to reassure our customers and team members that we have robust plans in place so they can continue to shop and work with us as normal.

“We’re the last of the major retailers to introduce regular weekend working in our distribution centres as a result of customer demand for seven days a week shopping.

“We want to support our team members in responding to the 24/7 reality of retailing today while also helping them to spend as much time as possible with their families.

“We’ve already given 400 team members an additional weekend off before our peak trading period begins and in a recent meeting with the union we’ve also offered to guarantee 2 in 3 weekends off outside of peak from January 2020 onwards.

“We don’t believe industrial action is in anyone’s best interests at this challenging time for the high street and retail in general.

"We have always believed the right way to resolve any differences is through listening, talking and working things through together and we encourage the GMB to call off their the strike and join us in finding a way forward which works for both our customers and their members.”
