Wilfried Zaha told Tottenham what they already knew with stark message to Emerson Royal

When Wilfried Zaha is in the mood, there are very few full-backs in world football that can deal with his pace, trickery and hell-bent determination to force a chance on goal.

That's why his performance on Saturday in Crystal Palace's 3-0 win over Spurs at Selhurst Park was such a joy to watch, as Zaha gave Tottenham debutant Emerson Royal a torrid time on the left wing all afternoon.

Spurs, who in the past were linked with a move for Zaha, decided to give their summer signing his Premier League bow against the vastly more experienced Ivorian, who returned the favour by barely giving Emerson an inch all game.

So far this season Palace fans hadn't seen Zaha have too much of an impact on games, though in front of a raucous Selhurst Park he was impossible to take your eye off of and certainly back to his bruising best.

Aside from his match-winning penalty and brilliant work to create Odsonne Edouard's first goal - which is also the first time he has both scored and assisted in a Premier League match since last October's 2-1 win over Fulham - Zaha put in an all-round gutsy display that spearheaded his team to victory in south London.

Across the 90 minutes, the Ivorian attempted more dribbles (24) than he has done in his first three Premier League games of the season combined (18).

He also made more accurate crosses (4), more attempts on goal (4), more passes (41) and won more duels (20) on Saturday than he has done in a league match this season.

And it wasn't just his offensive output that caught the eye either. Regularly Zaha came back to help out left-back Tyrick Mitchell, and on six occasions (again a season's best) he recovered the ball and started another attack.

After the game, Patrick Vieira challenged Zaha to keep his performance levels up and praised him for both sides of his game.

"Wilfried is a technical leader in the team," he said. "When he gets the ball at his feet he is direct [and] he is good on the one v one.

"I would like him to score more goals because I think he has the quality and the talent to do it. But today it was as well about him working out of possession. Today he made the effort to come and help Tyrick."

Now that he has his first goal of the season in the bag, Zaha will be hoping to continue his good form with performances against Liverpool (Sep 18) and Brighton (Sep 27).

He also now has 48 Premier League goals to his name, just how much would Palace fans love it if he brings up his half-century over the next two fixtures?
