Wilfried Zaha given rousing reception as Crystal Palace draw with Everton

Roy Hodgson has thanked Crystal Palace fans for their treatment of Wilfried Zaha.

The Ivory Coast winger appeared as a substitute in the goalless draw with Everton just days after handing in a transfer request at Selhurst Park.

Zaha had wanted to leave Palace for Everton and almost inspired his club to victory in their opener.

His name rang round Selhurst Park when he was introduced in the second half.

"He handled it very well but the crowd helped didn't they? It was such a great reception," Hodgson said.

"It was nice to have him available to give another dimension to our play. The two front players who started were exceptional but it was good to have him to bring on.

"That situation has been and gone and Wilf will make certain he brings his straw to the water and helps us have a good season, just like he has done in the previous two seasons."

Everton had Morgan Schneiderlin sent off late on and also lost Andre Gomes to injury.

Elsewhere, Graham Potter's new-look Brighton picked up an excellent 3-0 win at Watford .

An own-goal from Abdoulaye Doucoure gave the visitors the lead early on and substitute Florin Andone made it 2-0 in the second half.

The three points were sealed when debutant Neal Maupay expertly rounded Ben Foster in the Watford net before tapping home.
