Wilfried Zaha admits he suffers regular racist abuse on social media

Wilfried Zaha says he routinely gets racially abused on social media.

The Ivorian was subjected to vile language from a Newcastle fan following Crystal Palace's 1-0 win over the Magpies.

Zaha won a spot kick, which was subsequently converted by Luka Milivojevic.

In the aftermath of the game, a Twitter user racially abused him.

Zaha highlighted the tweet to his followers and captioned the abuse with 'lol'.

“To be honest, that is one of a million messages I get," he said.

Twitter urged to tackle 'vile' racist abuse towards stars like Mohamed Salah and Raheem Sterling

"I felt like it’s best to draw attention to it now so the people will get drawn out themselves.

"I feel it is not okay for you to go on social media and feel like you can say whatever you like. That is why I had to say something."

Watford striker Troy Deeney has also spoken out about racist abuse online.

The 30-year-old has now had to disable comments on his Instagram page.

“It’s sad to see," Zaha added. "I feel like people hide behind football.

"Over my career, it’s okay you hating me for the team that I play for.

"But people use that to hate you for your colour.

"It’s sad that more and more, each day, people are coming out, people are being racist over football."

Zaha has now called on the authorities to get serious about stamping out racism in football.

He said: "Unless there is something that frightens them properly, for them to stop doing it, it won’t stop.

"Right now, I feel much is being talked about it, but not much is happening.”
