The burning canopy of the Amazon rainforest and an albatross memorial are among the first images shown from this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year award.
The annual competition, showing the best nature photography from around the world, has revealed its Highly Commended pictures ahead of their display at the Natural History Museum.
Hard-hitting depictions of the wildlife trade and devastating effects of climate change appear alongside playful close-up captures of animals in their natural habitats, from a leaping squirrel to a pair of possums in a bin.
Nearly 50,000 entries from photographers both amateur and professional, adults and children, were sent in from around the world. All 100 of the top images will be on display at the Natural History Museum, next month, with the winners revealed at a virtual awards ceremony on October 13.
Dr Tim Littlewood, executive director of science at the Natural History Museum and member of the judging panel, said: “There has never been a more vital time for audiences all over the world to reengage with the natural world, and what better way than this inspiring and provocative exhibition. Photography's unique ability to spark conversation and curiosity is certainly special. We hope that this year's exhibition will provide an opportunity for audiences to pause, reflect and ignite a passion of advocating for the natural world.”
The exhibition opens at the Natural History Museum on October 16, where it will run until June 6; nhm.ac.uk
