A picture of a confrontation between an outraged marmot and a Tibetan fox has won the Wildlife Photographer of the Year award.
Yongqing Bao’s photograph will go on display this week in the Natural History Museum’s annual exhibition, alongside a close-up portrait of a spider, hundreds of huddled penguins and a Japanese macaque made to perform comedy skits for audiences.
The winners of the award were revealed on Tuesday night, beating more than 48,000 entries from 100 countries around the world. The Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year was named as 14-year-old Cruz Erdmann for his picture of an Indonesian big fin reef squid at night.
Roz Kidman Cox, chair of the judging panel, said Bao’s winning image is a photographically “perfect moment”, adding that “images from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are rare enough, but to have captured such a powerful interaction between a Tibetan fox and a marmot – two sepcides key to the ecology of this high-grassland region – is extraordinary.''
The exhibition runs from October 18-May 31 2020 at the Natural History Museum, before touring the UK, nhm.ac.uk. The next competition opens for entries on October 21.
