Wildfires at Glenfinnan Viaduct as emergency services scramble to battle flames

Dramatic footage has emerged of a huge wildfire near Scotland's iconic viaduct as temperatures rise across the country.

The clip shows smoke billowing from the hills in Lochaber near to Glenfinnan Viaduct as the flames ripped through grass and trees.

Tall flames can be seen licking below the helicopter in the video.

Scottish Fire and Rescue crews responded to reports of a fire in the open at around 3:30pm on Thursday, May 27.

Four fire engines in total were called to tackle the inferno, with crews working tirelessly using beaters and backpack extinguishers to get the flames under control.

However, helicopter support was urgently needed to tackle the blaze on the steep hills in the remote area from the skies.

Spead Bridge CRU, a Scottish Fire and Rescue community unit trained to deal with heath and forestry fires, shared the footage of water being doused over the fire.

Shortly before 10pm, the unit said: "Just back from a big wildfire at Glenfinnan. Thank goodness for helicopters!"

Around 250 acres of trees and grass were hit by the blaze but there were no reported casualties.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 3.41pm on Thursday, May 27 to reports of a fire in the open near to Glenfinnan Viaduct, Lochaber.

“Operations Control mobilised four appliances to the scene.

“Firefighters extinguished a fire which was affecting approximately 250 acres of trees and grass. “Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe and there were no reported casualties.”
