Wildfire warning issued for Edinburgh and the Lothians with rural communities most at risk

A wildfire warning has been put in place for the rest of the week – with people living and working in rural communities most at risk.

Warm and dry conditions are resulting in an increased risk of fires starting, with temperatures of around 20 degrees expected for parts of the week.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service say that these fires can also have a devastating impact on livestock, farmland and wildlife.

They've been issuing some top tips on how people can help protect themselves from the risks.

They say that one of the top ways you can keep your home safe is to create a ten metre zone around it where there are no combustible materials that could help spread flames.

Edinburgh's weather today: It's going to be as warm as Barcelona as temperatures soar

It's important that people remove old wood piles, felled trees and other debris while considering if there's enough space for firefighters to gain access.

And keeping grass cut short, at 75mm or less, is also strongly advised as a short green lawn will not carry fire.

The fire service also urge people to avoid lighting fires when there are high winds, high temperatures and low humidity levels forecast, and ensure no ashes are disposed of until they are cold to the touch.

In February a huge gorse fire broke out on Arthur's Seat, engulfing an 800 metre area, with crews spending hours battling the flames there.
