Wildfire rips through Kyle of Lochalsh as crews battle three-mile blaze for 24 hours

Firefighters have worked overnight to tackle a huge wildfire that is ripping its way through Kyle of Lochalsh.

Six crews from Skye and the Highlands were scrambled to the blaze in Western Ross-shire at around 10.20am yesterday.

A day later, four fire engines remain at the scene as the emergency workers continue to tackle the inferno.

The crews are in attendance from Broadford, Portree and Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye, as well as Glenelg on the mainland and two volunteer units from Spean Bridge and Cromarty.

Dramatic images show the hills lit up last night as plumes of smoke billowed into the evening sky.

The fire - believed to have broken out on a large patch of heather - spread its way cross-country overnight.

It is now thought to be three miles long.

Hose reel jets, beaters and backpack sprayers are among the emergency apparatus being used to tackle the flames.

Meanwhile, a helicopter was authorised to be used later this morning.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 10.20am yesterday of a fire on hill land in Kyle of Lochalsh.

"Six fire engines were called to the scene where they rotated overnight. Four appliances are still in attendance.

"Firefighters are using hose reel jets, beaters and backpack sprayers.

"A helicopter has been authorised for use later this morning."
