Wildfire near Lytton, B.C., forces evacuations, scorches five square kilometres

LYTTON, B.C. — Fire crews say a blaze that forced the evacuation of 11 homes in the province's Interior has been 30-per-cent contained.

The South Spencer Road wildfire flared up on Wednesday directly across from the Fraser Canyon Village of Lytton, about 250 kilometres northeast of Vancouver.

So far, flames have scorched five square kilometres of land.

Lytton itself isn't threatened, though more than 40 homes remain under evacuation alert in the Lytton First Nation and the Thompson-Nicola Regional District.

The fire began near a railway yard and fire officials believe it was human caused.

The B.C. Wildfire Service issued a warning early Thursday about strong winds that were expected to buffet the region.

Officials say one building has been destroyed but that the fire is moving away from structures.
