Wildcats not distracted by NBL Cup glory

Perth Wildcats coach Trevor Gleeson says he hasn't spoken about the prospect of winning the NBL Cup despite his team being on the verge of taking out the hefty pay cheque.

The NBL introduced the Cup this year as an in-season mini tournament, with all 36 games being played in Melbourne.

Three points are awarded for a win, with an extra point awarded for each quarter won.

The winner will take home $150,00, second place $100,000 and third place $50,000.

The Wildcats are currently top of the NBL Cup standings with 29.5 points.

Melbourne United, who have played one game more, are second with 27 points while Brisbane (25.5) are third.

The Wildcats take on the NZ Breakers and Adelaide in their final two games, and one win could be enough for them to take out top spot.

But for Gleeson it's the overall NBL ladder that matters most and he isn't losing focus despite being so close to taking home the NBL Cup.

"We haven't talked about it at all," Gleeson said.

"All we're talking about is NZ, Friday night's game. That's all we're worried about.

"On the horizon for us is to get back to RAC Arena."

The Wildcats have defied dire predictions to be second on the overall NBL ladder with a 7-4 record.

The NZ Breakers (4-6) have struggled this season and currently sit eighth.

But Gleeson will be taking nothing for granted ahead of Friday's clash.

"They've been banged up with a few injuries," Gleeson said.

"But where NZ and Perth are on the ladder it really doesn't matter.

"The games are always hotly contested with the rich history that we have against the Breakers. I expect this to be much the same on Friday night."
