Already windy conditions are forecast to strengthen across the Hunter throughout Thursday afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued a Strong Wind Warning for the Hunter Coast among other areas in the state, with conditions predicted to deteriorate.

At midday, there were seven total fire bans in place in NSW and fire activity was increasing across the state.

The NSW Rural Fire Service said people in Newcastle and the Central Coast would likely see smoke in the coming days.

"Strong winds are pushing smoke from a fire at Gospers Mountain in Lithgow," a spokesperson said on the NSW RFS Facebook page.

"There are currently no threat to homes."

There is a severe fire danger and a total fire ban in place for Newcastle and the Greater Hunter region.

The BOM is predicting another sunny and windy day for Newcastle on Friday.

People are reminded to look after their health and that of their family and friends during hot and dry conditions by staying hydrated.
