Tasmanians are being advised to brace for what could be the highest tide of the year, with a king tide forecast for the state's south-east tonight.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has forecast the king tide for between 6:00pm and 7:00pm, which may cause seawater flooding in low-lying areas between Southport and the Tasman Peninsula.
BOM severe weather forecaster Luke Johnston said some areas may experience seawater spilling onto roads.
"Very coastal areas and beaches will see the highest effects," he said.
"[On Wednesday] we had a report of the water just reaching the road at Huonville, so it's likely some water will spill over the road there [Friday] evening."
Mr Johnston said the tide was also likely to be abnormally high around the Lauderdale area.
The BOM has issued a severe weather warning for much of the state, as damaging winds are also forecast from late this morning, peaking in the afternoon.
The north-westerly winds are forecast to average between 60 and 70 kilometres per hour, with peak gusts exceeding 100kph.
But Mr Johnston said although the public should be prepared, there was no cause for alarm.
"We have potentially damaging winds pretty often in Tasmania, especially this time of the year."
The public are advised to follow the advice of emergency services.
The SES advises to:
- Supervise children closely
- Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings
- Manage pets and livestock
- Secure outdoor items, including furniture and play equipment
- Be prepared in case of power outages
- Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving
- Do not walk, ride or drive through floodwaters
