What’s new: A wild Siberian tiger was anesthetized and captured by local police and forestry officials in Northeast China’s Heilongjiang province on Friday after attacking a villager, the authorities told Caixin.
On Friday morning, a resident of Linhu village was attacked by the tiger and later hospitalized with an injury to their arm, local police told Caixin. Linhu village is under the administration of the city of Mishan, which borders Russia’s Primorsky Krai region.
The tiger also smashed the window of a passing car, though none of the vehicle’s occupants was injured.
A viral video believed to have been filmed by one of the car’s passengers shows a 2-meter-long Siberian tiger running across a flat field. People can be heard shouting for the driver to go, followed by a loud crashing sound.
The background: The tiger has been sent to Hengdaohezi Northeast Tiger Park in Heilongjiang’s Hailin city for further observation, state-run Science and Technology Daily reported.
In 2019, there were less than 50 known wild tigers in China, including 27 Siberian tigers, according to data from the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park Administration.
