Wild flowers will be planted on top of Cardiff bus stops to help attract bees

Wild flowers will be planted on top of Cardiff bus stops to help attract bees.

As part of work to redesign the layout of the city centre "bee bus stops" will spring up at various locations.

More than 10 bus stops will soon get the makeover as part of the Cardiff Council project.

The wild flowers and plants will aim to attract various insects, and have already been used in other cities across the world.

A council spokesman said: "Cardiff Council is re-designing roads in the city centre, to significantly improve the public transport infrastructure, improve opportunities for active travel (cycling and walking), as well as improve the air quality that we all breathe.

"As part of the plans, the council will be introducing bee bus stops in the city centre, where wild flowers and plants will be planted on the roof of specific bus stops to attract insects and most importantly bees."

The new bus stops will be installed on two shelters in Wood Street, one on Lower St Mary Street and on a bus shelter on Park Street.

They will also be installed on Castle Street, Kingsway, Dumfries Place, Station Terrace and Churchill Way, Cycleway 1 on Cathays Terrace and Whitchurch Road.

The rest of the bus stops in the city centre will remain unchanged.

The planting on the roof of each of these bus stops will be maintained by Clear Channel, as part of their contract with the council to maintain all of the bus stops across the city.

The Dutch city of Utrecht recently installed wildflowers on more than 300 of their bus stops.
