Wild elephants trample village in Kanchanaburi

Somkid Jukul points to the concrete block wall beside his house that was knocked down by wild elephants which raided the village and damaged crops in Kanchanaburi's Muang district early on Thursday.

A herd of wild elephants smashed through a village in Kanchanaburi's Muang district, destroying crops and property early on Thursday.

A concrete wall had been knocked down and the trees in the fruit orchards were badly damaged and stripped of fruit.

Elephant footprints and dung were left throughout the village.

The animals came from the nearby Salakpra Wildlife Sanctuary, officials said.

Local resident Namkhang Surannaf said elephants stampeded through her home at about 5.30am on Thursday. They trampled her crops and destroyed many of her belongings.

She said wild elephants often entered the villages in tambon Chongsadao to forage for food. Local people lived in constant fear.

She wanted authorities to step up efforts to solve the problem.
