KANCHANABURI: A herd of wild elephants raided a village in Muang district and destroyed crops and property early on Thursday.

The damage at Moo 1 in tambon Chongsadao included a concrete block wall knocked down at the home of  Somkid Jukul, and fruit orchards around the village stripped of fruit and the trees damaged.

Elephants' footprints and dung were left throughout the village.

The elephants came from nearby Salakpra Wildlife Sanctuary, officials said.

Namkhang Surannaf said elephants plundered her home about 5.30am on Thursday. They destroyed her crops and many of her belongings.

She said wild elephants often entered villages in tambon Chongsadao to forage for food, which made local people so fearful.

She wanted authorities to step up efforts to solve the problem.
