Wild boar brings train services in Wishaw to a halt after it wandered onto line

A wild boar brought train services to a halt after it wandered on to the rail line in Wishaw.

The beast, which was at first thought to be a pig, disrupted rail travel on the line between Glasgow Central and Lanark.

Officers from British Transport Police and Network Rail staff were deployed to try and catch the animal.

Trains through Wishaw were halted for several hours on Thursday evening after the hog was noticed next to the line around 7.30pm

ScotRail had alerted rail users to the delays to travel via their Twitter account, stating: ScotRail tweeted: “There’s a pig (yes, you read that right) on the line at Wishaw.

“Police and @NetworkRailSCOT are trying to capture it right now, so our Glasgow Central - Lanark services won’t be calling at Wishaw for the moment.”

A later tweet identified that the animal was the wilder relative of the pig and confirmed that ScotRail had been “advised that the beast involved is in fact a wild boar”.

Wishaw Abattoir Ltd is situated near to the rail line and just yards from Wishaw rail station. One Twitter user responded to the ScotRail suggesting it may have escaped from there.

It’s unclear if the boar was caught but trains travelling on the track resumed later on Thursday night.

Just before 10pm another post on ScotRail’s Twitter account confirmed: “The wild boar is now safely off the railway and our trains are now able to stop at Wishaw again.”
