Wil Lutz sends Saints to dramatic Week 1 win with career-long 58-yard FG

The New Orleans Saints overcame a big halftime deficit to seize the lead from the Houston Texans late in the fourth quarter, but a decision to dare upstart quarterback Deshaun Watson to retake the lead backfired. Watson took the Texans 75 yards in just two plays to put the Saints deep in their own territory and trailing by a point with 37 seconds left.

A couple of surgical throws from quarterback Drew Brees later, and the Saints sent Wil Lutz in for what would be a new career-long field goal attempt from 58 yards out. With the game on the line and a missed 57-yarder already behind him, Lutz came through.

It capped off a dramatic night for the Saints in which the offense and defense made plays in turn; Lutz ended up raising the bar for the special teams units after Thomas Morstead dropped a 53-yard coffin corner punt on the Texans’ 2-yard line.

If this game was any indication, Saints fans are in for an exciting (and at times intense) season.
