Rest easy, Timberwolves Nation: Young star Andrew Wiggins has signed that max $148 million contract that will keep him obligated to the Timberwolves through 2023.
An agreement he talked about on media day weeks ago as practically done was finalized just five days before the Oct. 16 deadline to do so.
Back on media day (Sept. 22), he said he was in no rush to sign the contract because he said he wanted to make sure he understood every bit of the contract.
He also said the money _ he told a reporter in mid-summer he believed he was worth every bit the max money _ won't change him.
"Not at all, I'm pretty much the same guy, same mood," he said. "That's what hard work does. I've been grinding my whole life for this contract. It's nothing but up from here. Never get complacent, keep getting better."
In a team statement, Wolves owner Glen Taylor said he was "pleased" to reach an agreement with Wiggins.
"Andrew is one of the best young players in the NBA and he has the talent and work ethic to get even better and be a foundation for our franchise for many years."
In the same statement, Wiggins called himself "very excited" to continue his career with the Wolves.
"I love it here," he said. "The fans and the organization have supported me from my first day here in Minnesota."
He thanked Taylor, coach Tom Thibodeau, the coaching staff and his teammate, too.
Thibodeau in that statement said Wiggins is "just scratching the surface" and added the "sky is the limit for him."
