Wigan Warriors player self-isolating after testing positive for coronavirus

A Wigan Warriors player is self-isolating after testing positive for coronavirus.

The rugby league star, who has not been named, discovered they had the virus after playing in the club's game against Hull KR on Thursday.

Test and trace analysis has not identified any close contacts on either side.

Both teams will have further tests today (Monday, September 7).

As it stands, Wigan's match against Catalans Dragons on Saturday is still set to go ahead.

The French club has been informed of the situation.

Recent games involving Super League sides Catalans Dragons and Wakefield Trinity were postponed due to coronavirus cases in the respective camps but they have been given the all-clear to resume training after returning negative tests.

A statement on Wigan Warriors' website on Monday morning read: "One Wigan Warriors player has tested positive for Covid-19 since their game against Hull KR on Thursday. He is self-isolating.

"As he played in that match, Test and Trace analysis has been conducted – with no close contacts identified, in either the Wigan or Hull KR teams.

"Both teams will have further tests today.

"At this stage both clubs plan to go ahead with their scheduled fixtures this week – Hull KR against St Helens at the Totally Wicked Stadium on Friday, and Wigan against Catalans Dragons at Stade Gilbert Brutus in Perpignan on Saturday.

"Catalans Dragons and St Helens have been informed of the situation."
