Wigan Warriors player ratings as Kai Pearce-Paul and Ethan Havard stand out on difficult night

Liam Marshall: The winger was playing out of position and did not look natural when he chimed into the line, while he also had some shaky moments at the back. 5

Jake Bibby: Was attracted to the ball for Wakefield Trinity’s first try and an error from a kick return gave the hosts the field position to extend their lead just before the break. 5

Willie Isa: One of Wigan Warriors’ best on the night as he combined strong running with tenacious defence. 7

James McDonnell: The youngster gave a good account of himself as he proved he has the physicality to make it at Super League level. 6

Umyla Hanley: Kept coming inside for work and was rewarded with an easy finish out wide to end Wigan’s long wait for points. 6

Tommy Leuluai: Tried his heart out but it just didn’t happen for him or his Warriors team-mates. 5

Harry Smith: Laid on Wigan’s only try with a nice cut-out pass but it was a mixed bag with the boot, with his poor drop-out giving Wakefield the chance to secure a hard-fought win. 6

Ethan Havard: The prop’s rampaging run from halfway was the highlight of the night from a Warriors perspective and he also came up with an important tackle on Ryan Hampshire. 7

Sam Powell: Typically hardworking in defence but struggled to get a disjointed Wigan outfit going in attack. 5

Joe Bullock: Denied by a superb tackle from Hampshire in the first half and was well handled by the Trinity defence throughout. 5

Kai Pearce-Paul: The athletic youngster offers the Warriors something different in attack with his offloading game and he showed he can defend too with a big tackle on Jay Pitts. 7

Morgan Smithies: Strong running on the edge but he looks better suited to the middle. 6

Oliver Partington: Did his best to get in a running battle with Eddie Battye in the first half but the Wakefield man stood firm and Partington faded as the game went on. 6

Bench

Liam Byrne: Wakefield looked like they had the stronger bench on paper and that is how it played out as Wigan’s interchanges struggled to make an impact. 5

Mitch Clark: Recalled from his loan spell at Newcastle Thunder on the eve of the game and came up with a series of errors in a poor outing. 5

Joe Shorrocks: Wigan’s best off the bench as he ran his blood to water. 6

Brad O’Neill: It was a tough initiation for the young hooker but he will be better for the experience. 5
