Wigan Warriors owner Ian Lenagan strongly denies reports of billionaire takeover

Wigan Warriors have denied claims that the club is on the verge of a takeover.

A report in League Express claimed that chairman and owner Ian Lenagan was set to sell his stake in the club to billionaire Mike Danson, who bought around 25 per cent of the club last year.

However, Lenagan has issued a response to the story, describing the report as "false".

Lenagan, who has owned the club since 2007, added that there were no plans for him to sell up.

In a club statement, Lenagan said: “This report is false. I am surprised that the editor of League Express, who has my personal mobile number and has phoned me many times previously for comments, did not check with me the accuracy of it before publishing.”

“It is well known that Mike Danson and Darryl Eales are shareholders in Lenagan Investments, the company which controls ownership of Wigan.

“This is a very strong position for Wigan Rugby League Club Ltd and its supporters. There are no current plans for the Lenagan family to relinquish control of Lenagan Investments and, hence, Wigan Warriors.”

Danson, who is worth a reported £1.1 billion, will still own his stake in the club. He is listed as the 128th wealthiest person in the country in the Sunday Times' Rich List.

Under Lenagan's watch, the Warriors have won four Grand Finals, two Challenge Cups and were crowned World Club Champions in 2017.

Last year they reached the Grand Final but lost in the last second to bitter rivals St Helens.
