Wigan Warriors' fixtures analysed: Perpignan trip, the run-in and DW return

Wigan Warriors' fixtures for the upcoming campaign are out, and it's a mixed bag of news for the fans.

Here are some of the key talking points after the schedule was confirmed.

Derby delight

It has been a void in the lives of many Wiganers since the start of the pandemic.

The opportunity to attend the derby has been taken from society just like many other sporting events.

But fans will be delighted that both fixtures this year are after the UK's current planned date to remove social distancing requirements. The teams will meet in July and September, which opens up the prospect of sell-out crowds.

That will be enough to get anyone excited.

Catalans trip

Dates have fallen kindly for supporters keen to get a trip to France in, too.

As it stands, Boris Johnson's roadmap will allow international travel from May 17th.

Wigan's game in Perpignan is due to take place on Saturday, May 29th.

It might be touch and go, and some fans might be put off booking, but there is certainly hope. A lot could depend on how many fans Catalans can have in their stadium.

A long(er) wait for the DW

The one downer on the fixture list, at first glance, is that there isn't a game pencilled in to take place at the DW until round 10, which takes place between June 17th/20th.

That's an additional month wait on top of what fans have already had to endure in their wait to watch a game live.

By the time that game gets played, it will have been at least 470 days since fans were last at a game, which was coincidentally against the Robins.

Tough run-in

The Warriors will be certainly battle-hardened by the time the play-offs come around.

There final six games are as follows:

St Helens (H)
Leeds (H)
Castleford (A)
Warrington (MW)
Hull FC (A)
Catalans (H)

That's one almighty end to the campaign. If you're a believer in momentum, that run-in certainly allows Adrian Lam's men to gain it, or lose it.

Missed away days

Though it's unclear when travelling fans will be able to attend games away from home, there are two games fans will definitely miss. There will be no trips to Headingley or Leigh Sports Village, with the games against Leeds and Leigh respectively both before May 17th. Their game at Salford takes place the first weekend when fans are currently due back in stadiums.
