Wigan Warriors can't afford any slip-ups as they face tricky Leigh Centurions encounter

There's an unusual feeling of positivity in the Wigan Warriors camp at the minute.

Despite defeat to Warrington, there's a consensus among the playing group that the Warriors are on the right track after a dismal losing streak.

Even before that, we all know by now the performances that brought seven straight wins weren't particularly enamouring to the fans.

But, despite everything that has gone before them, Wigan are fourth in Super League, and next week will begin to get something like a full-strength team to pick from.

Zak Hardaker, Jai Field and Morgan Smithies should return to the field, days after John Bateman is welcomed back against Leigh on Sunday.

Suddenly, there is reason to be positive.

But that's why the third of this year's encounters with the local Leythers is so important.

Leigh are struggling in Super League and remain winless after 13 attempts. But they've pushed Wigan close twice already this season.

In fact, Wigan were somewhat fortunate to win on the opening day of the season against Leythers, and it was close when they faced each other again.

Adrian Lam, as a player, is fully aware of how intimidating it is to play in front of Leigh's partisan crowd. Wigan, only four years ago, learned the hard way when the Centurions scored 50 past them.

With Leigh having a prolonged rest due to Covid cancellations, and Wigan having numerous quick turnarounds, this has banana skin written all over it.

But Wigan can't afford for that to happen, otherwise, it will disrupt rumblings of optimism.
