Wigan shopping centre to partially close due to coronavirus outbreak

A shopping centre in Wigan will be partially closed in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Only four shops deemed 'essential' by the government will remain open in The Galleries.

They are Heron Foods, Poundland, Home Bargains and Spectrum Community Health.

The centre's multi-storey car park will also be shut, bosses say.

The Galleries centre manager, Simon Tucker, said: "The priority for the centre is to remain trading.

"We have had to restrict access for security reasons, but ensure the four retailers that are essential can stay open.

"We have not seen any problems with groups gathering in the centre, but we want to put barriers in to stop it potentially happening."

Large sections of the centre are to be shut, although the public is still able to access the four shops.

Signs have been put up around the centre to help guide shoppers.

The majority of shops in Wigan town centre have been closed for one week after Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered all premises selling 'non essential' items to shut.
