Wigan police jump into action after spate of burglaries - they'll scour CCTV and switch shifts to patrol hotspots

Police in Wigan are stepping up patrols after a spate of burglaries.

Officers say they have noticed an increase in thieves targeting homes in the Hindley and Hindley Green areas of the town.

In response, they plan to switch shift patterns in order to increase the number of PCs around problem areas.

They have also reached out to the public and asked people to submit as much CCTV footage as possible, in an effort to gather information about the people responsible for these break-ins.

In a message shared on social media, an officer from GMP's Leigh, Atherton and Hindley Team said: "Unfortunately over the last month we have seen a slight increase in domestic burglary in the Hindley and Hindley Green area.

"Whilst we do not wish to alarm you. We feel it's important for you, the general public, to be made aware and would advise you to be extra vigilant in relation to security measures in the home and your car.

"We know that there is advice from the government to keep your house well ventilated in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic however leaving windows and leaving doors open whilst you go out for essential journeys make your property extremely vulnerable to chance thieves."

In response to this increase in burglaries, officers say they plan to make some changes in how they patrol Hindley and Hindley Green.

In the statement posted online, they added: "The neighbourhood team have deviated their shift pattern to line up with crime trends and will be working alongside response teams with a range of overt and covert patrols.

"The PCSO's will be in the area to try to gather as much CCTV as possible in an attempt to bring these offenders to justice."

Anyone with information on burglaries in these areas can contact police on 101 or online at www.gmp.police.uk.

Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
