Wigan plunge into administration as English Championship outfit are hit hard by COVID-19 financial crisis

Wigan Athletic have announced they have gone into administration after financial troubles brought on by the coronavirus crisis.

It's a huge blow to the club with a number of Scottish players in the squad and they could now find themselves in serious danger of being without a club soon.

That includes Celtic target David Marshall. The goalkeeper has been heavily linked with a return to Celtic Park and financial troubles at the DW Stadium could allow Neil Lennon to swoop for him in a cheaper deal.

A statement from the club's administrators said: “Our immediate objectives are to ensure the club completes all its fixtures this season and to urgently find interested parties to save Wigan Athletic and the jobs of the people who work for the club."

Former Rangers pair Lewis Macleod and Kal Naismith, who grabbed a double in their 2-0 win over Stoke on Tuesday night, have both been through this in the past with Rangers.

They ended up playing in the bottom tier with the Ibrox club after administration.

Wigan are also in danger of relegation from the Championship just now despite their recent run of form.

The club could face a 12 points deduction which would put them bottom of the table, two points behind Luton and four points away from safety.
