Wigan main road closed after sinkhole opens up

Roads are closed after a sinkhole opened up on a main thoroughfare in Wigan.

Springfield Road, in Swinley, has been closed at the junction of Woodhouse Lane, after a sinkhole appeared in the road surface.

It has meant some bus services are being diverted from the area.

“Springfield Road is closed at the junction of Woodhouse Lane in Wigan,” a tweet from Transport for Greater Manchester said just after 7am on Tuesday morning (July 27).

It added: “This is due to a sinkhole.

“Please seek an alternative route.

“Local Stagecoach bus services are on diversion.”

Yesterday, Stagecoach Manchester and Wigan said that two services were being diverted due to ‘roadworks’ in the area.

Those two services were the 5 and 6.

This is a developing story, with more to come.
