Wigan hospital trust is appealing for volunteers following the outbreak of coronavirus

A hospital trust is appealing for volunteers following the outbreak of coronavirus.

The Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) is on the hunt for people willing to lend their time and skills in its hospitals.

The trust, which runs the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, the Leigh Infirmary and Wrightington Hospital, is also recruiting for paid roles.

Hospital bosses are looking for electricians, plumbers, fitters, carpenters, joiners, medical engineering technicians, domestic assistants, drivers, porters, catering assistants and switchboard operators.

WWL, posting on its Facebook page, said: “We're looking for a number of roles to come and help us - both fixed term opportunities and unpaid volunteering - to start within the next two weeks, or sooner where possible.”

People with any of the underlying medical conditions which put them at a higher risk of coronavirus cannot apply.

These conditions, as listed by Public Health England, include: chronic lung disease, chronic heart disease, chronic kidney disease, chronic liver disease, chronic neurological disease, immunosuppression (whether caused by disease or treatment) and diabetes.

People who have had regular medical treatment for their asthma in the past three years, pregnant women and anyone over 70 are ineligible too.

The Wigan trust is the only trust actively recruiting volunteers in Greater Manchester.

The Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the MRI, Wythenshawe Hospital and the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital confirmed it was not looking for volunteers.

A spokesperson for Salford Royal also said they weren’t either.

Other Greater Manchester trusts did not respond to the Manchester Evening News’ request regarding volunteers, but have not posted appeals on their websites.
