Wigan high school to remain closed after suffering ‘significant damage' due to Storm Arwen

A Wigan high school will remain closed on Tuesday (November 30) after suffering significant damage over the weekend due to Storm Arwen.

Hindley High School was closed on Monday following storm damage but will now remain closed for another day to secure the site.

On Sunday, the Hindley school said the closure was due to 'unforeseen circumstances' with students able to complete work online.

Posting on the school’s Twitter page, a spokesperson for the school said it would remain closed on Tuesday: “Unfortunately the school will remain closed on 30th November following significant storm damage.

“We are securing the site for staff and students but have been unable to do that in one day.”

A letter sent out to parents and carers said Hindley High had suffered storm damage on Friday evening (November 26).

Experts have been onsite at the school to assist with an inspection of the damage caused.

The school is hoping to issue a further update on Tuesday.

A number of schools were forced to shut this morning following 'adverse weather conditions' as a yellow weather warning for ice remained in place for parts of Greater Manchester.

Over the weekend, Storm Arwen brought heavy snow and gusts of up to 80mph to the country.

Described as 'one of the worst wind storms the North West has seen in years', the storm also resulted in hundreds of homes losing power - with more than 130,000 people across the country hit with power cuts.
