Wigan families who get free school meals can get a grant towards uniform

Families in Wigan are being given some financial help with the cost of school uniform.

Parents whose children are eligible for free school meals can apply for a one-off grant of £25 for each child.

Wigan Council today shared the news in a Facebook post and said: "Families in receipt of free school meals can apply for a one-off grant to help them pay for school uniforms.

"Up to £25 for each qualifying child can be claimed as part of a new scheme to help families needing financial support through the coronavirus pandemic."

It says the authority has received almost £417,000 to extend its existing welfare support offer.

Further schemes that the money could help to fund are currently in development.

Families receiving free school meals are being contacted directly by letter and should apply before September 6.

Most local authorities previously offered school uniform grants, but many councils have either reduced theirs, or no longer offer funding to help.
