Wigan church demolished following rise in anti-social behaviour

A Wigan church has been demolished following a rise in anti-social behaviour.

The bulldozers are in at the site where Saint Edward’s Catholic Church once stood on Scot Lane.

The church building was opened in 1965, before shutting in 2017.

A spokesman for the Liverpool Archdiocesan office revealed the church had been in poor condition and became an anti-social behaviour hotspot.

There are no current plans for the future of the site.

In a statement, the Liverpool Archdiocesan office said: “The church building, opened in 1965, was closed following consultation on pastoral provision in the Wigan area in 2017.

“The building was in poor condition and has since been subject to an element of anti-social behaviour - as a result the decision was taken to demolish it.

“The trustees of the archdiocese currently have no plans for the future of the site.”
