Wigan Athletic Supporters Club react to administrators agreeing deal to sell Latics to Spanish bidder

The Wigan Athletic Supporters Club have made contact with the party who has had a bid accepted to buy the League One club and are talking over a potential involvement of fans in Latics' future.

It was announced yesterday by the club's administrators that an agreement has been reached to sell the club to an unnamed Spanish bidder.

The Latics have been in the hands of administrators Begbies Traynor since the start of July.

The club was relegated from the Championship to League One when a deduction of 12 points was applied to Wigan's 2019/20 total in the second tier of English football and condemned the club to the drop zone, despite finishing the season 13th.

Wigan's place in League One was confirmed when an appeal against the points deduction was dismissed.

The deal announced yesterday with the bidder - the identity of whom will remain anonymous until it is completed - not only includes buying the club, but also paying non-football creditors and thus meaning Latics will avoid a further penalty of 15 points being deducted.

Since the club entered administration earlier this year, supporters have rallied round to support Latics through the difficult and uncertain time.

A crowdfunding appeal from the Supporters Club entitled Save Our Club now stands at more than £670,000.

The appeal is not only designed to help the club, but also aims to give fans representation on the club's board in the future and give supporters a voice.

And a statement from the Wigan Athletic Supporters Club has confirmed contact has been made with the anonymous bidder and talks are taking place over the future involvement of fans with the club.

A statement read: "We are pleased to share the news that an unnamed bidder has now progressed to the next stage of exclusivity with the joint administrators.

"Although there remains a long way to go in this process, the Supporters Club has made contact with the bidder and we are currently in discussions regarding the future involvement of the supporters at Wigan Athletic, should their bid be successful.

"At this stage the bidder can not be named.

"However we will continue to keep you up to date with progress as often as we are able, and we hope to share more news regarding the next stages of the process over the coming days."
