Wigan Athletic seal deadline day loan signing of Swindon Town midfielder and confirm defender to depart

Wigan Athletic have signed Swindon Town midfielder Matty Palmer on loan until the start of January and confirmed defender Nathan Cameron is to depart the club.

The Latics made the move on transfer deadline day to secure the services of the 25-year-old until January 4.

Palmer came through the ranks at Burton Albion and went on to play 159 times for the Brewers between 2012 and 2018, scoring eight goals.

He also had a loan spell at Oldham Athletic before moving on to Rotherham United.

He played 29 times for the Millers and made 18 appearances out on loan last season at Bradford City.

He moved to Swindon at the end of January after his Rotherham deal was terminated and has now moved to the Latics until the start of January.

A Wigan statement read: "The Derby-born midfielder joined Rotherham United in January 2018 and spent two years with the Millers before moving to Swindon Town earlier this year.

"Palmer – who has also had loan experience with Oldham Athletic and Bradford City earlier in his career – has seen opportunities limited with Swindon following the early curtailment of the 2019-20 season, with his two appearances this season coming in the EFL Trophy, one of which included a late goal against Exeter City.

"Palmer completed the paperwork for his transfer this afternoon and will join up with his new teammates on Monday."

An outgoing from John Sheridan's squad will be defender Cameron after the end of his short term deal.

The 28-year-old played twice for the Latics in League One this season.

The club statement added: "We’d like to thank Nathan for his contribution at the start of this campaign and wish him well in his future career."
