Wigan Athletic reveal the amount that Bristol City paid for Joe Williams

Bristol City paid just over £1m to Wigan Athletic for midfielder Joe Williams.

The Robins were originally reported by many outlets as paying a figure closer to £2.5m, which was believed to be Williams' release fee for his side being relegated from the Championship.

However that is not the case with the Latics confirming the exact amount of the transaction themselves on Thursday morning.

The club is currently in administration and is holding a press conference to explain all their financial dealings to date, as the League One side battle to save the club from going under.

Paul Stanley confirmed via Wigan Today 's blog on the proceedings that: "We sold Joe Williams to Bristol City for £1.25million, after previous bids of only £400,000."

Williams has yet to feature in any of Bristol City's pre-season games so far and was not present as the Robins played Aston Villa on Wednesday as City drew 1-1 with Dean Smith's side.

The midfielder is touted as the man to add some physical play and tough tackling to City's play over the next seasons - and his eventual fee could be a bit of a snip in the fullness of time.

Stanley and Gerald Krasner, meanwhile, also confirmed the details on several other transfers as the administrators look to alleviate the financial problems currently afflicting the team.

"Antonee Robinson had a release clause for just under £2million," explained Stanley.

"I’m grateful to Fulham for not only giving us £2million, but also in one go which is a massive help in our situation.

"The Gelhardt, Weir and Devine sales allowed us to pay June wages. That stopped the entire squad walking away for free.

"We took over with a huge funding problem. There is still no income to this club apart from player sales and other assets."
