Wigan Athletic in pole position for Joe Williams transfer as Everton reject opening bid from Championship outfit

Wigan Athletic have moved into pole position to sign Joe Williams from Everton.

The Championship side have had a bid rejected by the Blues this week, believed to be worth around £1m, but are determined to land the young midfielder.

Williams has been attracting interest from elsewhere in the Championship and from clubs in Germany but Wigan have emerged to land the 22-year-old with Joe Royle, on the Latics’ board, a long-time admirer of the player.

Wigan have already done transfer business with Everton this summer, signing left-back Antonee Robinson on a permanent deal worth around £2m and are now looking to raid Goodison once more.

Matty Pennington, with the Blues’ first-team squad in Mainz today, is another who is liked by the powers at Wigan but it remains to be seen if a move for the defender is in the offing.
