Wigan Athletic confirm points deduction decision as administrator makes Leeds United comparison

Wigan Athletic have confirmed that they will appeal their 12-point deduction after they entered administration last week.

The Latics currently sit 16th in the Championship table, six points above Middlesbrough who occupy the final relegation place.

However, having entered administration last week, the club will receive a 12-point deduction at the end of the season from the EFL.

If the Latics finish in the bottom three without any deduction, the penalty will then be carried across to next season, otherwise, it will be applied after all 46 league games have been played out.

The club have confirmed today, via their administrator, Gerald Krasner, that the club will appeal the EFL's decision.

“The initial appeal has already been made by our solicitors," he told the press on Tuesday.

"We have before Friday this week to put in a substantive defence as to why the 12 points should not be deducted. That will be done on time, it will cost the club and administrator costs which have to be incurred. I'm giving no guarantees the penalty won't be imposed.

"My own club, Leeds, had that penalty while in administration. I’m giving no guarantees, but we're working on a strategy if we have a successful sale. I want to see the club go forward without any points deduction."

Krasner also explained there could be further penalties further down the line if Wigan fail to make certain payments.

He added: "There is a potential second points deduction if creditors aren't paid 25p in a pound, under a CVA, or informally it can be done by the administrators.

"That is going to cost quite a bit of money. The penalty can be 15 points next season."
