Wigan Athletic chief speaks out about QPR and Nottingham Forest's interest in winger

QPR target Gavin Massey is in 'active negotiations' with Wigan Athletic regarding extending his contract with the club, according to the executive chairman.

The 26-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and will leave on a free transfer unless a new deal can be arranged.

The winger has been widely linked with a move to Queens Park Rangers at the end of the season as they look for a cost-effective solution to strengthening their squad.

But according to chairman Darren Royle, the hope is very much that Massey will remain at the club beyond the end of the campaign.

Asked by Wigan Today about the winger's future, Royle said: "He’s obviously a great guy, and someone we greatly value and want to keep at the club.”

A potential deciding factor in his decision could be whether Wigan manage to avoid relegation from the Championship this season.

How Birmingham City's points deduction could impact QPR, Brentford, Millwall and others

The Latics currently sit three points above the drop zone in 19th place - a position which could strengthen their hand in keeping Massey.

Reports in the Daily Mail state that the winger would like to stay with Wigan, but that his decision could be swayed if they were to face the drop.

If that was to happen, then it's thought that Nottingham Forest would be joining QPR in the queue to sign the talented winger.
