The wife of Ukraine’s ambassador to London has spoken of her despair at seeing her country destroyed by Vladimir Putin’s war.

Speaking to a cross-party group of women MPs, Inna Prystaiko said: “Seeing everything we have had our whole lives taken away from us is unbearable.

“Like so many other Ukrainians, everything we have is in our country.”

Mrs Prystaiko, wife of top diplomat Vadym Prystaiko, made the comments during a meeting hosted by Lady Catherine Hoyle, wife of Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle, at Speaker’s House on Tuesday.

“I am from the central part of Kyiv, I love my country, I cannot imagine if my country is destroyed,” she told the parliamentarians.

Nickie Aiken, Conservative MP for the Cities of London and Westminster, organised the gathering of five MPs so Mrs Prystaiko could explain to them the appalling impact of the conflict.

“Families are separated, with women and children leaving and the men having to stay behind,” she stressed.

She added that millions of refugees from Ukraine desperately needed a home somewhere safe while the war lasted.

“They won’t stay because we have such a nice country,” she added.

Other MPs at the meeting were Richmond Park Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Olney, Labour’s Judith Cummins, Conservative Flick Drummond and the Scottish National Party’s Joanna Cherry QC.
