The soldier who lay dead in a barracks unnoticed for three weeks had been bullied for more than a year, his wife claims.
Beth Mongan says her estranged Royal Signalman husband Bernard – who sent her a photo of himself with a black eye and bruises – was set to put in an official complaint about three NCOs in his unit.
L Cpl Mongan, 33, was found in his room at Catterick camp on January 23.
But North Yorks Police say phone records indicate he died on January 1 or 2.
Mum-of-three Beth, 30, said: “He’d sent me texts he’d had enough and had been cataloguing problems for over a year.
"He planned to see his commanding officer.”
She claimed her husband, who spent his childhood in Ireland, had leave cancelled regularly and was bullied because of his accent.
“Bernie had complained once but the Army just moved him to a different job,” said Beth.
Police said his cause of death was still not known. The Army said it was conducting its own investigation.
An Army Spokesperson said:“Following the sad death of LCpl Bernard Mongan, our thoughts remain with his family, and we will continue to offer them support.
“The wellbeing of our soldiers is paramount and any allegation of bullying is taken extremely seriously.
"We are fully supporting the ongoing North Yorkshire Police investigation and are conducting our own investigation into what happened.”
