Wife creates amazing Newcastle United 'mancave' for husband during lockdown

A woman has built the ultimate Newcastle United 'mancave' for her football-mad husband in their garden shed.

Lesley Wardle created the £2,000 dream pad in just a couple of weeks featuring a bar, beer pump, computer, TV with Sky Sports and hundreds of items of memorabilia.

It was a surprise for her husband of 12 years Paul, who has been 'lost' without football since the coronavirus outbreak.

The Newcastle United season ticket holders have recently downsized to a property in Berwick and Lesley decided to get creative with endless boxes of collectables just gathering dust.

The 55-year-old said: "Our old spare room was full of merchandise from years gone by. Paul has scarves, shirts, programmes, books - everything you can think of.

"He's got a lot of things signed as well including shirts and a programme from the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Final in 1969.

"They've all just been sat in boxes and I had no idea where it was going to go in the new house.

"We're both big Newcastle United fans, but Paul is a fanatic and I just thought he would love a mancave."

With construction worker Paul working away in London during the pandemic, Lesley has been keeping busy with project 'mancave'.

And Paul's latest trip home was made even sweeter when he discovered what was waiting for him in the garden.

Paul, 56, said: "I was gobsmacked, she's one in a million that's for sure.

"This is definitely Lesley's finest moment.

"I have got everything I need in one room. It means so much, football is my life.

"All we need now is the football to be back on and it'll be perfect."

Paul is also joined in his shed with his dog Harvey, named after former Newcastle United manager Joe Harvey.

"I won't see much of him now," Lesley joked.

"It means Paul now has two of his favourite things, beer and football, in the same place.

"With everything that is going on at the moment it was great to see Paul's reaction. I hadn't seen him smile like that for a long time."

The couple have always loved Newcastle United, with the Toon playing a huge part in their relationship.

They hit it off on a first date after a match at St James' Park. Their second date involved the pair travelling to Merseyside to see the Magpies take on Everton at Goodison Park.

They also had a black and white themed wedding in recognition of their love for the club they have supported since being children.

Geordies have been left in awe of hotel worker Lesley's design after she uploaded a video to Twitter.

She said: "The replies I've had have been absolutely hilarious.

"I've had people asking me 'will you marry me?' and 'will you make me one?'.

"It's been such a laugh.

"I got a bouquet of flowers through the post so Paul definitely liked it."
