Wife, 65, shot her husband dead for checking on her too much after her heart surgery, cops say

Sheri Mitchell-Clutts, 65, was arrested after admitting to fatally shooting her 69-year-old husband Timothy Clutts because she was annoyed by him - (Franklin County Sheriff’s Office)

An Alabama woman is behind bars after she allegedly told investigators that she killed her husband after growing frustrated with him for bothering her while she recovered from heart surgery.

Sheri Mitchell-Clutts, 65, called 911 just before 7:30 p.m. Sunday to report that her husband Timothy Clutts had been shot. When Franklin County deputies responded to the couple’s home in Russellville, they found the 69-year-old man dead in a recliner from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Mitchell-Clutts initially claimed to 911 dispatchers that she had felt threatened throughout the day before the shooting, WAFF reported.

But she later admitted to shooting her husband of 15 years, telling investigators she had simply become annoyed with him, according to Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver.

Mitchell-Clutts was taken into custody and charged with murder, according to jail records.

Mitchell-Clutts reportedly told investigators she had open heart surgery about two weeks prior to the shooting, and explained that while she was recovering, her husband repeatedly came to her room, which irritated her.

She then allegedly grabbed a handgun, waited around for him to return and then went looking for him. She found him in a recliner where she shot him once in the chest, the sheriff said.

“Her demeanor seemed obviously upset from what little interaction I had with her at the scene, but you never know what’s going through somebody’s mind,” Sheriff Oliver said, according to WAFF.

Investigators say they are continuing to examine the couple’s history and what may have led up to the shooting.

“We’re going through at this time, but as of right now, we’ve gotten the call log and went back six years,” Sheriff Oliver said. “At this point, there’s, that we can find, no domestic related calls there.”

Mitchell-Clutts remains in the Franklin County Jail and is being held without bond, records show.
