Widow's 'tears of joy' as her husband's stolen gravestone is returned

A widow whose late husband's gravestone was stolen from a cemetery has revealed how she shed 'tears of joy' when she learned it had been returned.

Last week, Debra Thomas told of her anguish at discovering the gravestone for her late husband Neil Thomas, who died aged 43 on June 6, 2008 after being diagnosed with a brain tumour, had been stolen from Cwmgelli Cemetery in Treboeth, Swansea.

Engraved with the Prince of Wales' feathers and the Welsh dragon emblems, it had been removed from its foundations, prompting a police investigation.

But Mrs Thomas, of Gendros, has now spoken of her joy after it was returned to the spot it was taken.

The 53-year-old explained: "My friend who regularly walks through there phoned me and said 'Have you been up there?'

"I said 'no' and she said the stone is back. I obviously went straight up with my son and they had put it back in place, although it was not secure.

"We brought it back and then a close friend of ours went and secured it.

"I was crying with joy, I am over the moon. I'm still so bewildered but I'm relieved."

Mrs Thomas explained how she received droves of support from the public after people learnt of what happened.

"Everybody was really delighted for me. The support we have had - everybody has been fantastic," she said.

"The amount of people who have offered to get money together to help me replace it, I can't thank them enough.

"Nothing has been damaged at all. I was really happy, I'm really quite proud of that stone."
