A 43-year-old woman died after being mauled by two "massive" and "muscly" dogs as horrified neighbours tried to fight off the animals with tools and bricks.
Neighbours said they rushed out of their homes to help after they heard screaming and shouting coming from a home in Widnes, Cheshire.
Carl Rees, 28, said another man was in the kitchen trying to distract the dogs - which he described as "massive" - and he used tools and bricks in a desperate attempt to fight them off.
Paramedics and police were called to the scene at about 5.15pm on Tuesday to reports that a woman had been attacked by the dogs.
The woman was in a serious condition after being mauled and was treated by paramedics at the home in Widnes, Cheshire.

She died despite efforts to save her.
An air ambulance was called and landed nearby, shocked witnesses told the Liverpool Echo.
There have been no arrests at this stage as police continue to investigate.
Police did not reveal the breed of the dogs.
The house was cordoned off by police on Tuesday.
The woman's next of kin have been informed of her death.
Her death was announced on Wednesday morning.
A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "At around 5.15pm on Tuesday 24 September North West Ambulance Service informed police that a 43-year-old woman had been attacked by two dogs at an address on Graham Road in Widnes.
"Officers attended and discovered that the woman from Widnes was in a serious condition.
"She was treated at the scene by paramedics, however, sadly passed away.
"Her next of kin have been informed and enquiries remain ongoing to establish the circumstances."
Including the Widnes incident, at least three people have died after being attacked by dogs in the UK this year.
In June, Sharon Jennings, 55, died of sepsis after she was bitten by a dog while defending her own pet from an attack in Preston, Lancashire.
She was bitten on the hand and neck by a dog, believed to be called Psycho, and died in hospital days later after she was found unwell at her home.
Nine-year-old Frankie MacRitchie died when he was mauled by a bulldog-cross, called Winston, in a caravan at a holiday park in Looe, Cornwall in April.
In December last year, two-month-old baby Reuben McNulty died in hospital almost a month after suffering horrific injuries when he was attacked by two Staffordshire bull terriers at his family's home in Yaxley, Cambridgeshire.
