Wicklow GAA club match between Rathnew and Tinahely abandoned amid claims of racial abuse

A Wicklow Senior League match between Rathnew and Tinahely was abandoned on Sunday afternoon amid claims of racial abuse

The Division 1 football game was called off in the first half by referee Pat Dunne.

Rathnew GAA's Twitter account reported news of the game's abandonment and claimed that Dunne had made the call over alleged racial abuse.

A tweet from @RathnewGAA1885 read: "Senior football league Division 1 Round 1 @gardencountyspt @wicklowgaa @BillHillWicklow Half time tinahely: 0-1(1) Rathnew: 0-0(0) ref pat Dunne calls a Holt to the match after what he says to our chairman racial abuse to 1 of our players."

Tinahely chairman Patrick Murphy told the Irish Independent: "We had a club meeting on Sunday after the match with the executives from our club and players, and I can 100 per cent tell you we made no racial comments to anyone. We completely condemn racial abuse."

The Wicklow GAA Competitions Control Committee will be tasked with investigating the incident.

Irish Mirror Sport was told Tinahely GAA Club will not make further comment until the CCC have dealt with the issue.
