'Wicked' mum who stole £47k from couple told to pay back just £100 by judge

A 'wicked' mum who left a couple in 'emotional and financial devastation' after stealing £47,000 from them has been ordered to pay just £100.

Katie Sheldon has 28 days to hand over the money - or face an extra week in jail.

The 25-year-old stole the cash from her two friends in order to fund her gambling addiction.

She was sentenced to 21 months in prison after constantly asking her victims for loans and bombarding them with 11,000 messages pleading for more money, Birmingham Live reports.

The offender received £27,659 from the man and £17,917 from the woman over a six-month period between November 26, 2019 and May 26, 2020.

Judge Paul Glenn was told that she benefited from her criminality by £47,068.35 and her available assets were £100.

The judge made a confiscation order in that sum stating that each victim should receive £50.

If the 25 year old fails to pay up in 28 days, she faces another week in jail.

Judge Paul Glenn said: "The effect on your victims cannot be exaggerated. It has had a devastating effect on them both, physically, emotionally, psychologically and financially.

"You realised she was a soft touch. There was significant emotional distress caused to both victims who were deprived of their savings and reduced to borrowing from relatives. These are wicked offences."
