Why Zion Williamson was rooting for Thanos to win in ‘Avengers: Endgame’

SPOILERS are in this post, but if you’re that concerned about spoilers and still haven’t seen Avengers: Endgame yet, that’s kind of on you.

After being selected No. 1 overall in the 2019 NBA Draft on Thursday, Zion Williamson was asked if he had a message for the New Orleans Pelicans and their fans. He simply said: “Let’s dance.”

So at Williamson’s introductory press with the Pelicans on Friday, a reporter followed up about the message, asking if there was a specific origin to it or if it was just something he said at the time. (It’s a fair assumption that the 18-year-old star wasn’t referencing David Bowie’s 1983 hit.)

Zion explained his message actually did mean something, and it has to do with Avengers: Endgame and villain Thanos being his favorite character.

He said:

“Me and a group of friends, we went to see Avengers: Endgame, and if you know me, Thanos is my favorite character. So Captain America’s shield’s broken. I’m like, ‘We’re about to win. For once, the movie’s going to be realistic, and the bad guy wins sometimes.’ Because he’s the strongest.

“So my friend Axel, he’s like, ‘Hold on, hold on.’ And all of a sudden, all these superheroes who disappeared five years ago just start appearing, and I’m like, ‘Oh, might lose.’ And he looks at me and goes, ‘Let’s dance.'”

Well, Thanos lost, but good for Zion for choosing a villain as his favorite character instead of an Avenger like (probably) everyone else.
