Why your energy bill will be £107 higher this winter

Energy bills are set to rise by an average of more than £100 across the country this winter, according to a new report.

The £107 cost is the average people will have to pay above the normal if they work from home five days a week, according to a study by Energy Helpline.

People are able to claim £6 a week from employers if they work from home - but there is no obligation for companies to pay, reports The Guardian.

You can also claim £1.20 a week tax relief from the Government. You may be able to claim more if you keep all receipts and provide evidence of your expenses.

Mike Clancy, the general secretary of trade union Prospect, said: “Our worry is that the next phase of home working will be defined by some employers outsourcing the costs to their staff.”

Peter Smith, a director at fuel poverty charity National Energy Action (NEA), said: "This could lead to increased affordability issues, more energy debt or even energy rationing, which can be dangerous all year round but particular during colder weather."

He has called on the Government to make it law that companies have to pay for energy costs if you work from home.
