Why you won't be able to get the Eat Out to Help Out discount at restaurants today

Customers across the country spent August enjoying half price meals thanks to the Government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme .

Diners were treated to up to 50% off, up to £10 per head, at thousands of restaurants, bars and cafes last month, with the aim of kickstarting the economy following lockdown.

However, all good things must come to an end.

The Eat Out to Help Out scheme ran from August 3 to August 31, in a bid to encourage people to get back out and support the hospitality industry.

Since September has officially begun, the Eat Out to Help Out scheme is no longer available - which means no more half price meals.

Last week, the Treasury confirmed that the scheme would come to an end ; a spokesperson said: “Part of this popularity is precisely because it is a time-limited scheme - this reminds and encourages people to safely return to going out."

He said the scheme "complements a wider package of hospitality support that goes beyond August, including cutting VAT to 5%, paying the wages of furloughed staff, business rates relief and billions in tax deferrals and loans".

However, you’ll still be able to get discount at selected restaurants, as many have elected to continue the scheme, by funding it themselves.

While some are offering alternative versions of the deal, it still means discount at some of your favourite restaurants, including Pizza Hut and Wetherspoons.

Several Liverpool restaurants have confirmed they’ll be offering discount at their own expense this month - you can find a list of them here .
